How it works

“Characters” counts what you see: an emoji or a Hindi letter with a matra counts as one (grapheme clusters). “Bytes” is the UTF-8 storage size — important for databases and APIs — where an English letter is 1 byte, most Indian-script characters 3 bytes and emoji 4. “UTF-16 units” is what JavaScript’s .length reports.

Features

  • Grapheme-aware

  • Byte size

  • Limit tracker

Frequently asked questions

Why do bytes differ from characters?

In UTF-8, non-English characters take 2–4 bytes each. A 100-character Hindi sentence can be about 300 bytes.
