Word to PDF with Hindi Text: Convert Without Boxes or Broken Letters
In this article
Converting a Word document to PDF is easy until the document contains Hindi. Then the PDF can come out with empty boxes, question marks, or letters in the wrong order — the vowel sign ि drifting away from its consonant, or conjuncts like क्ष falling apart. This guide explains why that happens and how to convert Word files with Hindi (or mixed Hindi and English) text to PDF correctly, for free and without signing up.
Why Hindi breaks in some PDF converters
Devanagari is a complex script. The way letters appear on screen is not simply one character after another:
- Vowel signs move. In “कि”, the sign ि is typed after क but drawn before it.
- Consonants join. क + ् + ष becomes the single shape क्ष.
- Fonts must have the glyphs. A font made only for English has no Devanagari letters at all.
A converter that writes text character by character with a basic font — which many simple online tools do — gets at least one of these wrong. The result is boxes (missing font), question marks (wrong text encoding) or jumbled letters (no text shaping).
How FreeToolConvert handles it
The Word to PDF converter reads your .docx file in the browser and lets the browser lay out the text with a proper Devanagari font, the same way a web page displays Hindi correctly. Each page is then placed into the PDF. On top of that, the converter adds an invisible text layer, so you can still search the PDF and copy text out of it.
Mixed documents work the same way: English words use a Latin font and Hindi words use Noto Sans Devanagari, in the same paragraph.
Convert Word to PDF without signing up
- Open the Word to PDF converter.
- Choose your .docx file. Nothing is uploaded — the conversion runs on your device.
- Pick the page size (A4, Letter or Legal), orientation and margins.
- Select Convert to PDF and download the file.
No account, no email address and no watermark.
Check the result
Open the PDF and look at three things:
- Words with ि (कि, लिए, सिंह) — the sign should sit before its consonant.
- Conjuncts (क्ष, त्र, श्र, द्ध) — they should be single joined shapes.
- Search — press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) and search for a Hindi word. It should be found.
When to use high-fidelity mode
Browser conversion re-flows the document onto PDF pages. That works well for letters, reports, notices and applications, but page breaks can differ slightly from Word, and some advanced layouts are simplified. Try High-fidelity (server) mode, where it is available, when you need:
- Old .doc files (Word 97–2003).
- Headers and footers reproduced exactly.
- Multi-column layouts or text boxes.
If server mode can’t handle a file, the tool tells you rather than producing a broken PDF; for old .doc files, saving the document as .docx in Word first always works. Server mode includes a free daily allowance, and the file is deleted automatically within an hour.
Tips for Hindi documents in Word
- Type in Unicode. Use Windows’ Hindi keyboard, Google Input Tools or your phone’s keyboard. Older “Kruti Dev” style fonts store English letters that only look like Hindi; they will not convert correctly anywhere.
- Use a Unicode Hindi font such as Mangal, Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Devanagari.
- Avoid text boxes for Hindi paragraphs where you can — normal paragraphs convert most reliably.
